Delhi reports 10 new Omicron cases a day after highest daily count in five months

A new variant of COVID-19 was first reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) from South Africa on November 25. As per the WHO, the first known confirmed B.1.1.529 infection was from a specimen collected on November 9 this year.

New Delhi:  Ten new Omicron patients have been reported in the National Capital taking the total number of cases in Delhi to 20.

Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Friday said that out of the 20 cases, 10 patient have been discharged from the hospital.

This comes a day after Delhi recorded sharpest Covid spike in 5 months on Thursday (December 16).

As per a bulletin provided by the health department, the positivity rate for the day stands at 0.15 per cent, up from 0.10 per cent on Wednesday. A total of 56,027 samples were tested during the last 24 hours, down from 58,328 samples tested the previous day.

On November 26, the WHO named the new COVID-19 variant B.1.1.529, which has been detected in South Africa, as ‘Omicron’. The WHO has classified Omicron as a ‘variant of concern’.
