FM announces free foodgrains for 8 crore migrants for next 2 months

New Delhi: Giving details of the second tranche of stimulus package, the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday announced free foodgrains for all migrants for next two month.

“Free food grain supply for migrants for the next two months. For non-card holders (national food security act or state-level cards) will receive 5 kg of wheat or rice and 1 kg chana per family,” Sitharaman said.

She further said,” We are engaging with state governments to approach and identify the migrants. Close to 8 crore migrants will benefit from this and thr Centre will bear the cost. Rs 3,500 crore will be spent on this intervention.”

Also, PDS ration cards will be made portable, allowing migrant workers to use their ration cards across states, she said adding this would benefit 67 crore beneficiaries or 83 per cent of PDS beneficiaries, in 23 states by August.

By March 2021, 100 per cent coverage under ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ will be done, she added.
