Fresh bid to make Rahul Gandhi Congress President, Ashok Gehlot likely to table proposal

According to a leading daily, the party high command is also keen on burying differences between Gehlot & Pilot, both stalwart leaders of state unit. In last few days, Sonia Gandhi has met both of them.

New Delhi: Putting the rout in recent Assembly elections on the backburner, fresh clamour has begun for elevating Rahul Gandhi as the President of Indian National Congress (INC). And, among those taking the lead is the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee chairman Ashok Gehlot.

The Chief Minister along with former Deputy CM Sachin Pilot and Cong working committee member Raghuveer Meena are preparing the stage for unanimous election of Rahul Gandhi as Congress party president.

According to reports, Ashok Gehlot will, in all likelihood, table a proposal at the Congress Chintan Shivir in Udaipur, scheduled between May 13-May 15, for unanimous election of Rahul Gandhi as party president.

Gehlot is talking to senior Congressmen in other states over phone and building an opinion about reposing faith in Rahul’s leadership as party prepares for future challenges.

Though Gehlot & Sachin Pilot don’t see each other eye to eye but both are lobbying for Rahul Gandhi in their capacity and reaching out to party leaders & workers for the grand event. Raghuveer Meena is overseeing the ground level work and is in touch with party leaders from backward community.

The mobilisation of support for Rahul Gandhi in Rajasthan unit assumes significance because it was here in 2013, that the Gandhi scion was elected as party Vice-President. Rahul’s name was unanimously accepted for the post at a similar Chintan Shivir organised in Jaipur’s Birla auditorium and the man who steered this campaign was none other than Ashok Gehlot.

About 400 party leaders are likely to descend at the Chintan Shivir next month. Arrangements have been put in place for boarding & lodging facilities for the party leaders. Sonia Gandhi will stay in the city for 3 days.
