From 14.72 to 43.76 crores: PM Jan Dhan accounts record three-fold rise

Many government benefits (Centre / State / Local Body) are channelized to the beneficiaries accounts by mode of Direct Benefits Transfer (DBT) scheme.

New Delhi: Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), one of the flagship schemes of Modi government to bring a comprehensive financial inclusion, has been progressing ahead at a galloping speed.

The scheme, launched 7 years ago in 2014, has been growing leaps and bounds and till date it has brought a whopping 43.76 crore population into the banking system.

As per official data, the number of Jan Dhan Account holders in March 2015 stood at 14.72 crore and has grown to 43.76 crore till October 2020.

As the PMJDY completes 7 years of successful implementation, more than 43 crore beneficiaries have availed banking facility, with transactions amounting to 1.46 lakh crore. Another interesting fact is that women account for 55% Jan Dhan account holders while 67% of these accounts are held by people in rural & semi-urban areas.

The three-fold rise in Jan Dhan Account holders has ensured that not only a huge chunk of deprived population gets benefits of banking system while the economy also gets an impetus in forging ahead.

The deep penetration of banking system into hinterland and remote areas has been possible because of government’s thrust, concerted approach and effective use of technology.

Benefits from govt schemes via Jan Dhan Accounts

As the PMJDY provides banking facility to at least one member of a household, the beneficiaries can directly receive these benefits without intervention by any middlemen.

PMJDY has been the foundation stone for a range of people-centric economic initiatives. Many government benefits (from Centre / State / Local Body) are channelized to the beneficiaries accounts by mode of Direct Benefits Transfer (DBT) scheme.

Whether it is DBT, COVID-19 financial assistance, PM-KISAN, increased wages under MGNREGA, health insurance cover, PMJDY account holders can avail of all these benefits with a click of mouse, something which never existed before 2014.

During Corona lockdown in 2020, 1 in 2 accounts opened was a PMJDY account.
