From ‘Jumlajeevi’ to ‘Dictatorial’: These words are now banned in parliament, check list here

The Chair often declares several words and expressions as ‘unparliamentary’ throughout various legislative bodies across the nation

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha secretariat has come up with a new booklet that lists a long queue of words which are now banned to use in both- the upper and the lower houses of the Indian Parliament.

The document that has been issued ahead of the Monsoon session which is set to commence from Monday onwards, lists words such as jumlajeevi, Snoopgate, Covid spreader, baal buddhi, among others.

Much to everyone’s surprise, common words like corrupt, hypocrisy, incompetent, and drama can also not be used while debating or in an address inside the parliament.

Several more expressions have been mentioned in the booklet including Khalistani, Shakuni, taanashahi, Jaichand, dictatorial, khoon se kheti, vinash purush, and others.

The Chair often declares several words and expressions as ‘unparliamentary’ throughout various legislative bodies across the nation. Though, the Lok Sabha Speaker in the lower house and the Rajya Sabha Chairman in upper house will hold the final decision on the removal of words and expressions from the record.

The list further declares behri sarkar, nikamma, nautanki, dhindora peetna, and dohra charitra as non parliamentary expressions.

The recent compilation of words and expression also includes those announced as unparliamentary in the Indian parliament as well as the state legislatures in 2021, plus the one banned in several other Commonwealth Parliaments.

Further, the Lok Sabha secretariat also contains that any defamation made against the Chair in the parliament in any language will be considered unparliamentary and will be removed the records immediately.
