‘Halal meat’ tender by Dehradun school triggers controvresy, Bajrang Dal activists protest

The right wing outfit claimed that the majority of the students and staff at school belonged to a particular community and the decision to serve ‘halal’ meat was nothing but a deliberate attempt to insult their sentiments.

New Delhi: A leading school in Dehradun floating a tender for ‘Halal meat’ has triggered uproar Dehradun city of Uttarakhand. As the news spread, Hindu outfit activists gathered outside the school premises and asked the police to take action against the school management for hurting religious sentiments of the particular community.

Welham Boys School, one of the oldest and reputed boarding schools in the country, on June 26 floated a tender in a local news daily, inviting bids for supplying halal meet and poultry products for its students.

Following this, the Bajrang Dal workers protested outside the school premises and demanded school management to recall the tender. They also asked the police to take action against it.

“We have filed a complaint with the local police demanding action against the school management for insulting Hindu students and community. We demand strong action against management for fanning communal tension,” said Vikash Sharma, Bajrang Dal President told media persons, after filing complaint at the local police station.

School issues clarification

Meanwhile, the school administration has termed the controversy as “unnecessary” and “unwarranted’’

“We floated a tender for the halal meat and next will float tender for the non-halal meat,” Mahesh Kandpal, Welham School’s vice principal said, as quoted by News18.
