New Delhi: In a rare move, Delhi university’s Hansraj College has opened a cow protection and research centre on its campus to research various aspects of the bovine, considered as auspicious & sacred animal in Hindu religion. College Principal Dr Rama Sharma said the centre has been named Swami Dayanand Saraswati Gau-Samwardhan ewam Anusandhan Kendra. However, the move hasn’t gone down well with the students who view it as a ‘regressive move’ in an institute of high repute. The Students’ federation of India (SFI) unit of Hansraj College rebuked the management and also alleged that this was raised at a place where women’s college hostel was proposed to be built.

Dr Rama Sharma said that the centre has been started with one cow. It will be expanded further ‘’if the research that is done proves to be useful and beneficial’’, added Sharma. Besides the research, the centre will provide ‘’pure milk and ghee’’ for students.

Reportedly, the college also has made plan to open a gobar gas plant. However, it is yet to get the approval from the college authority.
