Home Minister tables Delhi services bill in Lok Sabha, amid Opposition clamour

Though, most of Opposition parties have joined hands to oppose this bill, some others like Biju Janata Dal (BJP) and Jagan Reddy’s YSR Congress have extended support to the Centre.

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday tabled The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, in Parliament that will replace the contentious Ordinance on control of services in the national capital.

The Delhi Services bill, brought to empower Delhi L-G with transfer & postings of officers, has seen fierce protests from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), aided by united Opposition flock I.N.D.I.A. Arvind Kejriwal & team have vociferously protested against the bill, outside the house and persuaded the Opposition ranks to rally behind it, calling it an ‘assault on the Constitution’.

While Amit Shah presented the Serivces Bill, the opposition benches raised clamour against it.


Introducing the bill in the house, Home Minister said “the Constitution gives Parliament, right to bring any law with respect to Delhi”.

Though, most of Opposition parties have joined hands to oppose this bill, some others like Biju Janata Dal (BJP) and Jagan Reddy’s YSR Congress have extended support to the Centre.

BJD MP Pinaki Mishra said, “The Supreme Court judgment says that Parliament can enact any law in the case of Delhi. All objections are political. They have a constitutional foundation of Parliamentary foundation. Hence, give us the right to introduce the bill.”

The Bill, meant to replace Ordinance, proposes that suspension and inquiries of Delhi officials would be under the control of the Centre.
