India is one of the largest importers of the world in defence sector, says PM Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a webinar for consultation towards effective implementation of Union Budget provisions in the Defence Sector.

The Centre has made a list of 100 items for import embargo. It makes us ‘Aatmanirbhar’ as our manufacturing capability will improve, reliance on other countries will reduce & there’ll be jobs, said PM Modi on provisions for Defence sector in the Budget.

We’ve to build an image as a leading defence exporter globally and strengthen the image as well. India’s private sector must learn from DRDO’s experience in indigenous design and development. Rules and regulations must not hinder this and we’re quickly making reforms for the same.

Private sector will now be included at the beginning of projects now.

From 2014, we have tried to promote transparency, predictability & ease of doing business in the defence sector & have been walking ahead. We’ve also brought strong reforms such as de-licensing, de-regulation, promoted exports & foreign investment liberalisation for this sector.
