India-US global challenge institutes to be set up; will usher in new era of partnership, says Dharmendra Pradhan

The Minister termed it a ‘historic moment’ and said that as the two nations join hands in education & research, it is bound to make a global impact in coming years.

New Delhi: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has welcomed the resolve by Prime Minister Narendra Modi & US President Joe Biden to deepen strategic partnership between Indian & American universities.

He said that the Education Ministry will work closely towards setting up of India-US global challenge institute, for strengthening research co-ordination & developing strong ties between Indian & American universities.

The Education Minister also said that the recently launched India-US initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) is expected to usher in new phase of partnership and accelerate the outcome given the sizeable talent pool in India and the US.

Union Minister said that a joint task force has also been constituted with the Association of American Universities and top Indian Institutes of Technologies (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Sciences (IISc) in this regard.

“As envisioned by our leaders, the Education Ministry will work to setup Indo-U.S. Global Challenge Institutes to deepen research partnerships and people-to-people exchanges in areas such as semiconductors, sustainable agriculture,clean energy, health and pandemic preparedness & emerging technologies,” said the minister.

The Minister termed it a ‘historic moment’ and said that as the two nations join hands in education & research, it is bound to make a global impact in coming years.

Pradhan said that this partnership between India & US will facilitate free flow of ideas, student exchange programs and joint IPRs.

“This academic partnership will help in developing solutions for a sustainable and secure future,” the minister added.

Notably, PM Modi on the state visit to US said that America has some top-class educational institutes & research infrastructure while India’s is the world’s largest ‘youth factory’.

The iCET was announced after bilateral talks between PM Modi & Joe Biden in Tokyo last year and it is spearheaded by National Security Councils of both countries. This is aimed on strengthening US-India partnership on high-end technologies that will drive global growth and protect shared national security interests.
