Indian jawan who went missing in 1971 war, found alive in Pakistan jail

Satya Devi received a letter from the Ministry of External Affairs stating that he was alive and efforts are being made to get him released along with others which have given her the hope of meeting her husband Mangal Singh again.

New Delhi: A Indian Army jawan Mangal Singh who went missing 49 years ago has been found alive in Pakistan jail. 75-year-old Satya Devi (Satya Devi) living in Jalandhar, Punjab lost her husband during Indo-Pak War. It is now coming to light that her husband Mangal Singh was taken prisoner of war by the Pakistan army in 1971.

He was part of the Indian Army in the 1971 war against Pakistan. He must have been 27 years of age at that time. Mangal joined the Army in 1962 and was initially posted in Ranchi. Later, he was transferred to West Bengal and was reported missing. Satya received a telegram saying that the boat carrying him and other soldiers sank and he has died.

Letter states that ”The government of India has repeatedly raised the matter with the Government of Pakistan through diplomatic channels for early release and repatriation of 83 missing Indian defence personnel, including Prisoners of War, who are believed to be in Pakistan’s custody. The name of L/Nk Mangal Singh is one among these 83 Defence personnel. However. Pakistan has not acknowledged the presence of any Indian defence personnel in its custody, The Government remains seized of the matter and continues to pursue this matter with the Government of Pakistan.”

Satya hopes that his husband gets release from Pakistan jail. She said that she had to face a lot of difficulties in raising children but however she never gave up and expected that her husband too returns soon.
