Is France right in denouncing Islamist radicalism? Over 97% netizens say ‘yes’ in online poll

Here is an online poll which elicits views of netizens on Macron’s condemnation of Islamist extremism. Was he right in calling out Islamist radicals and is the protest by Muslim groups in various countries wrong? See reactions below…

New Delhi: The killing of 3 persons including beheading of an elderly woman outside a church in Nice has brought the spotlight back on Islamist extremism in France. Just two weeks ago, a well-meaning school teacher Samuel Paty was beheaded in Paris suburb, for referring to caricatures of Prophet Mohammad.

Such terror in the name of religion was condemned and criticised by many global leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. France President Emmanuel Macron took a tough stance on Nice knife attack and called it an attack on French values and also claimed that ‘Islam was facing a crisis’.

French President has also promised a crackdown on Islamist radicalism and shutting down religious centres accused of fomenting radicalism & violence. However, Macron’s tough stance has triggered widespread protests by Muslim groups in many parts of the world.

Protests in Bhopal against Macron

Muslim protesters accused Macron of Islamophobia and have also called for boycott of French goods.

Malaysia’s ex-PM Mahathir Mohamad went to extent of glorifying violence. “Muslims have a right to be angry and to kill millions of people for the massacres of the past,” Mahathir had tweeted.

Newsroompost conducted an online poll on October 30 and asked, “Is France right in denouncing Islamist radicalism?”

More than 97% of respondents have lauded France for holding firm against acts of terror while less than 3% think that Macron has gone overboard in condemning it as Islamist extremism.

A group of netizens, while welcoming Macron’s move slammed those who didn’t agree with France’s stand.
