Javed Akhtar bats for Shah Jahan’s Indian roots, gets schooled by netizens

Twitterrati found comparison between Obama & Shah Jahan hugely offensive and listed numerous incidents, telling him difference between a migrant & invader.

New Delhi: Noted lyricist-poet Javed Akhtar is known for his explicit views on any political and social issues in the country. This time, he has courted controversy with his objectionable remarks. Akhtar took to Twitter and batted for Mughal emperor Shah Jahan’s Indian roots. He compared Barack Obama with Shah Jahan and said the former president was born in US and hence had the right to contest elections but same favour couldn’t be extended to Mughal king Shah Jahan.

Justifying his remark, he said that Shah Jahan’s mother and grandmother were Rajputs and hence had 75% Rajput blood, hence he should have been treated as Indian.

Akhtar tweeted, “Obama’s father was a Kenyan his paternal aunts still live in Kenya but since Obama was born in US he had the right to contest the presidential election Shah Jahan was the 5th Gen in India his grand mom n mom were Rajputni ( 75 %blood Rajput) but they call him a foreigner”.

It may be noted that Shah Jahan was one of the Mughal emperors, apparently the 5th generation of Mughal ruler in India. His grand-father Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar expanded his kingdom to great extent during his reign. To avoid bloodshed, he also practiced ‘soft invasion’ by getting married to princess of Rajput kingdoms. The Rajput wives of Akbar were also allowed to perform their Hindu rituals while being married to Muslim ruler.
Akbar had children with these Rajput wives also. Jahangir, Akbar’s son is also said to be from one of his Rajput wife, a princess of Amber. This trend continued with Jahangir also. Shah Jahan’s mother is said to be Jagat Gosain, a Rajput princess from Marwar, present day Jodhpur.

Differentiate b/w Invader & citezen: Netizens tell Akhtar

Twitter users however did not find this comparison noteworthy, with numerous users telling him the difference between a migrant and an invader. One Twitter user asked Javed Akhtar to invest in a dictionary since he was unable to distinguish between a foreigner, an immigrant and an invader.

Yet another Twitter user said Barack Obama became the US President through democratic process whereas the Mughals invaded India through mass murdering and destruction. Obama served his countrymen, while the Mughals ruled, the user said.

Writer and columnist Saket succinctly highlighted how Shah Jahan was not raised as a Rajput and in turn raised an Islamic fanatic in Aurangzeb.

Many highlighted Shah Jahan and Jehangir harboured hatred for indigenous people and their faith, which was predominantly Hinduism. Shah Jahan also ordered demolished 76 under-construction temple in Varanasi.
