New Delhi: Aditi Singh, the rebel Congress MLA from Rae Bareli joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday, dealing a strong blow to the grand old party. For many years, she has been vocal against the party high command and was giving signals of possible switchover.  Aditi Singh is the daughter of Akhilesh Singh, who was elected as MLA five times.

Swatantra Dev Singh, the UP BJP chief called for a press conference in Lucknow as Singh joined the party in the venue.

In 2017, the 34-year-old rebel Congress leader was elected as a member of the UP Legislative Assembly. Though a strong supporter of Congress ideology, she did not think twice before voicing criticism for the party and also extending support to the ruling dispensation.

Notably, Singh has been a strong critic of the Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi. Last week, she strongly criticised Priyanka Gandhi for her reaction when PM Modi announced to repeal the Farm Laws.

She stated, “Priyanka Gandhi had a problem when Bills were brought. She has a problem when the Laws (Farm Laws) have been repealed. What does she want? She should say it clearly. She is only politicising the matter. She has now run out of issues to politicise.”

In May 2020, Aditi opposed the fact that Congress arranged 1,000 buses for the migrant workers during the Covid-19 lockdown, following which she was suspended by Congress from the women’s wing. Besides, she went against her party and supported the Abrogation of Article 370. Again in 2020, she opposed her party’s call for boycotting UP assembly after which Congress sought her disqualification. However, the request was rejected by the speaker.

Before 2019 general elections, rumours even floated that Aditi will be marrying Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. However, Aditi clarified that fact saying, “Such rumours upset me. I would like to clarify that Rahul Ji is my rakhi brother and I am really saddened by such rumours on social media.”
