Kannada actor Chetan Kumar arrested for ‘insulting’ comment on Hindutva

In a tweet on March 20, actor Chetan Kumar wrote, “Savarkar: Indian ‘nation’ began when Rama defeated Ravana & returned to Ayodhya —> a lie 1992: Babri Masjid is ‘birthplace of Rama’ —> a lie 2023: Urigowda-Nanjegowda are ‘killers’ of Tipu—> a lie.”

New Delhi: Kannada actor Chetan Kumar was on Tuesday arrested by Seshadripuram police in Bengaluru and put behind bars for his allegedly derogatory & offensive remark on Hindutva.

The actor had courted major controversy by claiming that ‘Hindutva was built on lies’. He shared this remark on his Twitter account, which went viral and soon raised the hackles of right-wing outfits.

The actor had tweeted yesterday that Hindutva was built on lies and it could only be defeated by the truth.
Moments after his tweet went viral, a couple of Hindu outfits took strong objection to his comments and said that this insulted the sentiments of community.

In a tweet on March 20, actor Chetan Kumar wrote, “Savarkar: Indian ‘nation’ began when Rama defeated Ravana & returned to Ayodhya —> a lie 1992: Babri Masjid is ‘birthplace of Rama’ —> a lie 2023: Urigowda-Nanjegowda are ‘killers’ of Tipu—> a lie.”

He further said that Hindutva could only be defeated by truth.

While the right wing groups protested against loose comments on Hindutva, a person named Shivakumar lodged a complaint against him at Seshadripuram police station. Following police complaint, the actor was apprehended.

Chetan Kumar in 14-day judicial custody

The actor, a Dalit & tribal activist was produced before a district court. He was slapped with charges of insulting a religion or religious beliefs and making statements that promote enmity between classes”.

This is not the first time that the actor has landed in controversy & also behind bars. He was arrested last year also for making derogatory comments in the hijab case.

The actor had posted objectionable tweet on the Karnataka High Court Justice Krishna Dixit, who was then hearing the hijab cases in state.
