New Delhi: Prime Minister paid his tributes to seer Kesavananda Bharati on Sunday and remembered him for his contributions towards community service and empowering the downtrodden.

In a tweet, Modi said the spiritual leader was deeply attached to India”s rich culture and great Constitution, and that he will continue to inspire generations.

Kesavananda Bharati, a petitioner in a Supreme Court case that led to the landmark doctrine of the basic structure of the Constitution, died in Kerala on Sunday. He was 79.

The prime minister tweeted, “We will always remember Pujya Kesavananda Bharati Ji for his contributions towards community service and empowering the downtrodden.

“He was deeply attached to India”s rich culture and our great Constitution. He will continue to inspire generations. Om Shanti.”

Meanwhile, Twitter user mourned Bharati’s demise on Sunday. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan took to Twitter and said, “Anguished by the demise of Swami Kesavananda Bharati Ji, Head of Edneer Mutt at Kerala’s Kasaragod. He was a revolutionary Seer who fought in SC in year 1973 which helped define basic rights under the Constitution. My thoughts and prayers are with his devotees and followers.”

V Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs & Parliamentary Affairs, said that his teachings will continue to enlighten people & guide all to march forward in the path of peace, harmony & development. “Deeply saddened by the demise of Swamiji of Edneer Mutt, a proponent of Advaita & an inspiriting spiritual leader Pujya Kesavananda Bharati Ji. He was the petitioner in the landmark Supreme Court judgment on fundamental rights which re-emphasised tenets of Indian constitution,” he added.
