New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a 26-year-old law student from Udaipur in Rajasthan was arrested on Saturday (January 30) for allegedly sending death and rape threats to Rohini Singh, senior journalist and frequent contributor to The Wire.
According to police official, he has been held for criminal intimidation and intention to insult the modesty of a woman after he allegedly threatened a woman journalist from Delhi on social media.
The threat was given on Twitter in response to Rohini Singh’s tweet on the farmers’ tractor rally.
The 26-year-old identified as Kapil Viayan had threatened her by sending her a direct message on Twitter. In a tweet about the threats, Singh tagged Udaipur range police and Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot and demanded action.

Ashok Gehlot orders immediate action
Soon after this, CM Gehlot directed the Udaipur IG and SP to take immediate action.
According to the information provided, it was also found that the law student is associated with BJP’s student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
Following the complaint by Singh and order by CM Ghelot, Inspector general of police (IGP) Udaipur range, Satyaveer Singh confirmed that Viayan was arrested and put under interrogation on Saturday(January 31).
“Our team has arrested Kapil Singh, a resident of Semari, who was sending murder and rape threats to journalist Rohini Singh,” the IGP had tweeted.
“During his interrogation, the accused confessed that he had doled out a threat to the journalist in anger against her style of reporting on the ongoing farmers’ agitation at the borders of Delhi,” said the Udaipur IGP.
After the arrest, Journalist Rohini Singh later thanked Gehlot and Udaipur police for the prompt action.
