Maharashtra-Karnataka Border Dispute: Maharashtra Assembly passes resolution proposed by CM Eknath Shinde

New Delhi: CM Eknath Shinde has moved a resolution over the Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute in State Assembly on December 27. The resolution said that the Central government should urge the Karnataka government to implement the decision taken in the meeting with the Union Home Minister Amit Shah and there should be an understanding with respect to guaranteeing the safety of the Marathi people in the border areas. In the meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah, it was directed that there should not be any law and order issues at the Maharashtra-Karnataka border.

Yesterday, while CM Eknath Shinde was in Delhi, he targeted the Uddhav Thackrey government for their approach towards the issue. Talking about Thackeray’s comments on his Delhi visit, he said that his government approved the Mhaisal expansion scheme worth Rs 2,000 crore while the previous MVA government discontinued some government schemes in border villages.

Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, assured that a resolution on the border issue would be tabled soon in the Assembly. He also talked about justice for the Marathi-speaking population in Karnataka.

The border dispute began in 1960 and in 966, Mahajan Commission, headed by the then Supreme Court Chief Justice Meher Chand Mahajan, included 247 villages in Karnatak and declared 264 villages as part of Maharashtra. The matter is currently placed before the Supreme Court.

The State Assembly also saw a protest by the opposition that alleged the Eknath Shinde government of corruption.
