
New Delhi: Maharashtra recorded 40,414 fresh COVID-19 cases on Sunday, the highest one-day rise since the pandemic began. Mumbai city also witnessed a record rise in cases during the day, health officials said.
It took the caseload in the state to 2,71,3875. With 108 fatalities reported on Sunday, death toll reached 54,181.
Mumbai reported 6923 new COVID-19 cases, 08 deaths; taking the total number of cases to 3,98,674 and deaths to 11,649
Meanwhile, night curfew will be imposed in entire Maharashtra from today in view of alarming rise in coronavirus cases.
Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray ordered night curfew from Sunday onwards, it said.
Thackeray also warned of stricter restrictions if the people did not observe COVID-19 safety protocol, it said.

Earlier, the chief minister had reviewed the COVID-19 situation in the state in a meeting with divisional commissioners, district collectors, superintendents of police and deans of medical colleges.
“I do not wish to impose lockdown. But there seems a possibility of healthcare facilities falling short given the rise in number of coronavirus patients,” Thackeray was quoted as saying.
