Major success for security forces, Hizbul Muhajideen chief commander Saifullah killed in encounter

Saifullah had taken over as chief of the Hizbul Mujahideen after Reyaz Naikoo was killed in May.

New Delhi: Hizbul Muhajideen chief commander Saifullah was killed during a gunfight in the Rangreth area on Sunday, the police said, calling it “a major success against militancy”. Saifullah, who had taken command of the outfit after the killing of Riyaz Naikoo in May this year, was one of the most wanted terrorists in the Jammu and Kashmir and was involved in several attacks on the security forces, an official said.

Inspector-General of Police, Kashmir Range Vijay Kumar said that they had got an information that some militants who had come for south Kashmir are hiding in the area in Rangreth. “A joint operation was launched by Police, CRPF and later Army also joined,” he said.

“Dr Saifullah who was the number one commander of Hizbul Mujahideen has been killed in the encounter. It was a very successful operation,” Jammu and Kashmir police chief Dilbag Singh told news agency ANI.

“This is a huge success for the police and security forces. This is not a small achievement,” senior police officer Vijay Kumar told reporters at the encounter site.

Kumar said that one militant was killed and another captured alive during the encounter. “Our sources have told us that the militant killed in the operation is Hizbul Mujahideen chief commander, Dr Saifullah.” He said that they are waiting for the family members of Hizb chief to identify the body.
