Makar Sankranti 2024: Traditional foods to celebrate the Harvest Festival of India

Devotees visit Haridwar and Rishikesh to take a holy dip in river ganga. Many devotees take out time and visit temples to take the blessings of their lord.

New Delhi: Makar Sankranti also known as the Harvest festival of India will be celebrated on 15th January. Devotees offer prayers to sun god on this auspicious day and also visit temples. Bathing in river ganga is also considered auspicious on this day. Devotees visit Haridwar and Rishikesh to take a holy dip in river ganga. Many devotees take out time and visit temples to take the blessings of their lord. Today we will discuss about the traditional foods that is being prepared on this particular day.

1 Dahi Chura

This is the most ancient dish which is being prepared on the auspicious day of Makar Sankranti. This dish is made from soaked rice, curd, jaggery and sugar. In many houses people make this dish and offer it to their god and then serve it to the members of the family. It is an old ritual being celebrated in many Indian families.

2 Til Laddoo

Til Laddoos are made from seasame seeds along with jaggery and ghee. These laddoos are especially made on this day of Makar Sankranti. The freshly made laddoos are made and distributed to all the members in a family.

 

3 Makara Chaula

This is the most important dish prepared on the day of Makar Sankranti. The dish is prepared using fresh harvested rice, sugarcane, jaggery, milk and bananas. The dish is first offered in the temple to the lord and then eaten as prasad.

4 Puran Poli

This Maharashtrian dish is made from wheat flour with moong daal and cooked chana, ghee along with jaggery. This is the most loved dish of Maharashtra and is also prepared on the day of Makar Sankranti.

5 Khichdi

Preparing Khichdi on the day of Makar Sankranti has been an age old tradition and is being followed for many years now. People make khichdi and offer it in the temples as bhog and also distribute among the poor people as prasad. It is also said that eating and serving khichdi on this particular day brings good luck.
