New Delhi: The Madras High Court has asked the Tamil Nadu government to reconsider its decision to convert late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s into a memorial.

Madras high court Suggests that Jaya residence should be made as official residence cum office of TN CM instead of converting it into a memorial and that a portion of poes garden residence can be converted into a memorial

This order has come as a big setback for the Tamil Nadu government, which has been showing unprecedented rush to convert the AIADMK supremo’s residence into a memorial before the crucial 2021 elections.

If Govt is allowed to use public money to acquire private properties there will be no end to it say, judges.

Observing that by law J Deepa and J Deepak, niece and nephew of the former chief minister, are her class II legal heirs, the bench said that only a portion of the property can be converted to a memorial if required. “If governments are allowed to use public money to acquire private properties then there will be no end to it,” observed the bench.

MHC adjourns the matter to 8 weeks and asks the State government to respond on their decision.
