Mallikarjun Kharge defeats Shashi Tharoor; becomes new Congress President

Mallikarjun Kharge has been elected the new Congress President after the counting of votes concluded today. 

New Delhi: Mallikarjun Kharge has been elected as the new Congress President after the counting of votes concluded today. He grabbed the chair after defeating Shashi Tharoor with 7,897 votes. Kharge will now replace Sonia Gandhi as the new President of the Congress party.

Soon after the results of the election came out, Tharoor took to Twitter to share his statement. In the statement, he conveyed his warm congratulations to Kharge for his victory. He also said that he humbly accept the decision of the party delegates who voted in the favour of Kharge.

Tharoor did not forget to thank former President Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for doing their own bit to ensure free and natural elections.

”I look forward to working with Congress colleagues to face the challenges ahead. I believe the revival of our party has truly begun today,” read the last line of the statement.

”It is a great honour & a huge responsibility to be President of @INCIndia &I wish @Kharge ji all success in that task. It was a privilege to have received the support of over a thousand colleagues,& to carry the hopes& aspirations of so many well-wishers of Congress across India,” wrote Tharoor on Twitter with his statement.

The Thiruvananthapuram MP also mentioned the ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra in the copy. He wrote, ” The spectacular success of the ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra is a testament to the family’s enduring appeal to the masses.”

Upon the win of Kharge, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, who earlier opted out of the Congress president race, congratulated him on Twitter and wished the party get more progress under the leadership of Kharge.

Besides, he also congratulated Shashi Tharoor for fighting the election in a democratic manner.
