New Delhi:  Surat Court today rejected the application filed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi seeking stay on his conviction in the 2019 defamation case on ‘Modi surname’ remark.

Now, Rahul Gandhi will approach the Gujarat High Court or Supreme Court to file his appeal against the Surat court’s order.

The Surat Sessions Court had granted bail to Former Wayanad MP, who had filed an appeal following his conviction in the case on April 3.

Rahul Gandhi, who was a Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad was disqualified after a lower court in Surat sentenced him to two years in jail on March 23 under sections 499 and 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). A case against Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case was filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Purnesh Modi.

The  case was filed against Rahul Gandhi for his remarks against “Modi” surname while addressing a campaign event ahead of the Karnataka Lok Sabha Elections in 2019.
