Modi Surname Row: Rahul Gandhi to move Session court against his conviction in defamation case tomorrow

The defamation case agaisnt Rahul Gandhi was filed BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi for Congress leader’s “Modi surname” remarks.

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi likely to travel to Gujarat’s Surat as an appeal will be moved in the Sessions court there against his conviction and two-year- sentence in defamation case, said Congress sources.

Rahul Gandhi was recently disqualified as Congress MP from the Parliament after he was sentenced to two years in prison over a 2019 defamation case. According to reports, Rahul Gandhi will be challenging his conviction and sentencing in the Surat sessions court tomorrow.

Former Congress leader also asked for an interim stay on the conviction till the matter is disposed of.

Rahul Gandhi was immediately granted bail The former Congress president has, in his plea, asked the sessions court to set aside the Magistrate order convicting him in the defamation case.

Rahul Gandhi had made this remarks in 2019 while addressing a rally in Karnataka ahead of Lok Sabha elections, where he targeted PM Modi over his surname.

After he was disqualified from the Parliament, he was served a notice to vacate his official Delhi bungalow.
