Nagaland: Hundreds protest against Tuensang SP for allegedly assaulting constable

The 2015-batch IPS officer has left the Tuensang town after the huge public outcry. The police officer left the Tuensang District HQ and was in Mokokchung on Sunday evening. The police department is yet to issue any statement on this.

New Delhi: Hundreds of students and residents in Tuensang town took out a protest march against the Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Nigam and demanded his immediate removal.

The Confederation of Chang Students’ Union (CCSU), organising the protests, called for his removal in 24 hours failing which they will intensify their stir.

The CCSU has given 24-hour ultimatum to Nagaland Director General of Police. The students body has raised protests against alleged abuse of power and high-handedness of Tuensang SP.

In its complaint, the students body said that the police officer physically assaulted the constable after latter ‘inadvertently’ damaged the wall of his residence. It has taken offence to SP beating the constable in uniform and also extracting money from him for ‘accidental damages’.

“This incident is inhumane. Assaulting a jawan in uniform in unacceptable and disrespectful. This act will be considered as carried out with bad intentions”, the students body said in its statement.

What happened and how the issue snowballed?

According to CCSU President, the wife of SP reportedly sent a picture of damaged wall to her husband via WhatsApp. The furious husband and SP rushed back to him and started thrashing the driver without any enquiry. The jawan fell down to the ground but this didn’t placate the police officer. He continued to assault the constable by kicking in the stomach repeatedly.

What’s more offensive is the fact that when the police officer knew of driver’s tribal identity, he added 3 more punches oh his face.

The students body is up in arms against the police officer for the alleged discrimination, terming it an ‘inhumane act’.

2015-batch IPS officer leaves town after public outcry

Taking strong offence of SP’s alleged overbearing attitude, the CCSU claims that many people have been victims of physical assault by him in the past.
