New Delhi: Pakistan on Thursday allowed Indian consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav, a former Indian Navy officer facing death row on spying charges in Pakistan.
The Indian diplomats were allowed two-hour window to meet Kulbhushan Jadhav. This is the second consular access.
This comes days after Pakistan claimed that Jadhav had refused to file a review plea to his death sentence and rather opted to appeal for mercy.
In September 2019, India got first consular access for Kulbhushan Jhadav in three years with Indian deputy high commissioner (DHC) Gaurav Ahluwalia in Islamabad meeting him for two hours. The diplomat found Jhadav under “extreme pressure to parrot a false narrative to bolster Pakistan’s untenable claims”, according to release issued by India’s Ministry of external affairs.
Last week Pakistan had claimed that Kulbhushan Jadhav — sentenced to death by its military court – had refused to file a review plea and instead “preferred” to appeal for mercy.
India had rejected the claim, saying that it was proof of Islamabad’s “reticence” to implement the order of the International Court of Justice in “letter and spirit”.
The Ministry of External Affairs also charged Pakistan of coercing Jadhav into forgoing his right to seek the implementation of International Court of Justice’s verdict, which was in his favour.
