President Ram Nath Kovind gives assent to National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Act 2021

The bill, which entails that the term “government” referred to in any law made by the Delhi legislative assembly will imply Lieutenant Governor, was passed earlier in Parliament after it was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind gave assent to National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Act 2021.

Parliament on Wednesday (March 24) approved a bill giving primacy to Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor (L-G) over the elected government, after uproar by the opposition in Rajya Sabha with members of several parties walking out of the House.

The bill which seeks to make it clear that the “government” in Delhi means the “Lieutenant Governor” was passed by Lok Sabha on March 22.

However, after the GNCTD bill in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday which was termed as a “sad day for Indian democracy” by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who vowed that the AAP dispensation will continue to struggle to restore power back to Delhiites.
