Punjab Cong crisis: Amid Captain’s ‘quit party’ threat, Sunil Jakhar’s praise of Rahul Gandhi triggers more speculation

According to highly placed sources, Sunil Jakhar, former PCC President has found favour with the high command and is likely to be pitched for Chief Minister’s post.

New Delhi: The internal squabble in Punjab Congress has again escalated and reached a breaking point, with Captain Amarinder Singh standing at direct odds with the party high command.

According to reports, Cong high command has asked the Chief Minister to resign and make way for a new leader but this hasn’t gone down well with latter’s supporters. The beleaguered Chief Minister has put down his foot and has been unrelenting. Reports suggest that Captain’s faction is mulling revolt against high command’s diktat, with the CM threatening to quit the party.

Sources said that Capt Amarinder called up Congress President Sonia Gandhi today morning and told her that he will quit the party than facing such humiliation.

Now, all eyes are on the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) scheduled at 5 PM today evening.

Will Sunil Jakhar be new Punjab CM?

Amid the ongoing chaos and vertical divide in Punjab Congress, speculations are rife over election of a new leader as the state Chief Minister.


According to highly placed sources, Sunil Jakhar, former PCC President has found favour with the high command and is likely to be pitched for Chief Minister’s post.

What has triggered the buzz over Jakhar’s elevation is his tweet, where he congratulated Rahul Gandhi for taking a bold decision to resolve the Punjab predicament.

A day earlier, Harish Rawat, Punjab party in-charge informed about the CLP meet based on demands of party MLAs.


Days ago, about 40 legislators had written a letter to party president Sonia Gandhi and sought a CLP meeting to draw out the roadmap for party’s strategy in upcoming Assembly elections, scheduled in early 2022.
