SC takes suo motu cognisance on prevailing COVID-19 situation in India, issues notice to Centre

SC appointed senior advocate Harish Salve as amicus curiae to assist it in suo motu case on COVID-19 management.

New Delhi: Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance on supply of oxygen and essential drugs issue, it also issued notice to Centre.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, today told Supreme Court that the country is in dire need of oxygen.

A three-judge bench of Supreme Court, headed by CJI SA Bobde, asked the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to submit or inform it by providing a national plan, after taking into record the fact that at least 6 different High Courts have been hearing the matter.

SC wants national policy in place on issues relating to supply of oxygen, essential drugs & method and manner of vaccination.
SC also said that it will also examine judicial power of HCs to declare lockdown amid COVID-19 pandemic.
