New Delhi: Keeping up with unique initiatives and new precedents in ensuring a good life for prisoners, the Central prison of Puducherry has launched a new ingenious scheme to engage and enlighten jail inmates.

‘Second Chance: Live Life with Dignity’ scheme has been launched at the prison in which jail inmates are being accorded training on developing several vocational skills. The range of items made by them will be marketed as Puducherry Prison Inmates Product.

Ahead of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, the jail inmates have made half feet to 2-feet tall Lord Ganesha idols with paste paper. These idols made and available for sale at very reasonable rates, are in various postures including the Lord Ganesha sitting atop a bull or a lion. The fine sculpting skills of jail inmates is already grabbing attention from all around.

Saving prisoners from depression & frustration

Speaking on the unique initiative, Ravideep Singh Chahar, Puducherry Inspector General (Prisons) told newsmen, “the training program was launched to keep prisoners engaged in some work and not let negativity sneak into their minds.”

“In Covid-19 times, the prisoners are facing additional burden. Their trial has become prolonged and due to Covid-19, they are also unable to meet their families. Such schemes & training programs will go a long way in mitigating their mental pain,” added Puducherry IG (Prisons).

Ganesha idols, prepared by prisoners, put up for sale

Lord Ganesha idols prepared by prison inmates are no less attractive than those available in markets. In a bid to promote the Prison Product, a sale was also put up at the office of Director of Local Administration Department. The idols have been priced from Rs 250 to Rs 1,000/-.

Prison officials say that such training programs will be a life-changing experience from the inmates. Apart from relieving mental stress, the prisoners are also learning a new skill that in turn will help them earn livelihood later, when they are released from jail.
