New Delhi: Sharjeel Imam, the JNU student arrested for sedition, is under the scanner of investigative agencies for allegedly pocketing illicit funding from abroad.

According to reports, the probe revealed that the illicit funds were routed to his account for fanning anti-national activities in the country. Crucial documents recovered from his laptop and mobile phone helped the agencies connect the dots and unearth the ‘wicked designs’.

Sharjeel’s open provocation against CAA and NRC is no secret as he suggested breaking away Assam from nation’s map to pressurise the government.

Controversial and ‘inflammatory’ posters in Hindi and Urdu language have been recovered from his laptop and they were even distributed at religious spots. Police have traced identity of 15 suspects, reportedly students of Jamia and Aligarh Muslim university, who aided him in spreading anti-national sentiments.

Delhi Police is already in process of questioning Jamia students, regarding illicit funding. Some of them have been questioned, some others called to Crime Branch while a few have been issued notice for questioning.

Probe also revealed Sharjeel Imam’s alleged links with PFI, the radical group said to be behind the violent anti-CAA stir in Uttar Pradesh.

Sharjeel Imam’s bank accounts are also being scanned to find out the alleged link with foreign funding.

Sharjeel nabbed from Bihar, charged with sedition

Sharjeel Imam was nabbed from Kako in Bihar’s Jehanabad district on January 28 for allegedly making seditious and inflammatory speeches against the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The Crime Branch had registered sedition case against him on January 26 for delivering a provocative speech on January 13 after its video went viral. Subsequently, he went into hiding and the police launched a manhunt to nab him.
