SP heavyweight Azam Khan, wife and son surrender in court; sent to jail

The SP lawmaker and  his family reportedly ignored court summons in a case related to forgery and failed to appear in court despite  several notices.

New Delhi: In a major blow to Azam Khan, the Samajwadi Party (SP) heavyweight was sent to jail on Wednesday alongwith his wife and son Mohd Abdullah Azam. The trio were sent to 7-day judicial custody in connection with several cases lodged against them. The court will hear the matter on March 2.

The Samajwadi leader had made several attempts to get anticipatory bail but the same was denied by the court.

Earlier on Tuesday, a local MP-MLA court in Rampur had ordered attachments of the properties of Azam Khan, Tanzeen Fatima and Abdullah Azam after non-bailable warrants were issued against them in one of the cases and they failed to appear in court.

The court declared the three as “absconders” and had issued non-bailable warrants against them after they failed to appear before it.

The SP leader has more than 88 lawsuits pending against him. He has been charged with land grabbing, encroachment, power theft. His son Abdullah Azam was booked for forgery in birth date documents.
