Stubble burning decriminalised, Modi govt accepts farmers demand

Government’s decision to decriminalize stubble burning comes as another climbdown in wake of farmers protest, after the repeal of three farm laws.

Govt willing to address apprehensions of protesting farmers: Tomar

New Delhi: Days after revoking the three farm laws, Modi government has decided to decriminalise stubble burning by farmers. Giving in to the demands by farmer organisations, the Centre has announced that those caught in stubble burning won’t be implicated or charged with an offence.

“Farmer organizations had demanded to decriminalize stubble burning by farmers. The government of India has accepted this demand as well,” Tomar told newsmen today.

Every year, Delhi & adjoining cities get choked by the toxic air, whose primary reason has been said to be stubble burning i.e. burning of crop residues in the fields.

Government’s decision to decriminalize stubble burning comes as another climbdown in wake of farmers protest, after the repeal of three farm laws.

The decision comes days ahead of proposed tractor march on November 29 by farmers towards Parliament.

Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar also urged farmers to return to homes, now that the farm laws have been withdrawn.

“After the announcement of the repeal of the three farm laws, there is no point in continuing farmers’ agitation. I urge farmers to end their agitation and go home,” the Agriculture Minister said.

Meanwhile, Winter Session of Parliament is set to begin on November 29. On the very first day of Parliament, a bill to repeal the three laws will be tabled in the Parliament.
