Surveillance Committees: CM Yogi’s crucial step towards preventing the spread of COVID

Special attention was paid to the identification and treatment of the elderly above 60 years, pregnant women and young children and people suffering from morbidity.

Lucknow: To tackle the enormous challenge of COVID-19, CM Yogi Adityanath has been consistently monitoring situation across the state himself. In this regard, he has also appointed nigrani samitis (surveillance committees), the step which had proved to be very useful and an effective way in prevention and treatment of corona infection during the first wave. The response to this first phase was also encouraging.Locally, can be called as real time COVID-19 warriors, these surveillance committees are now enabling early detection, isolation and treatment and keeping the virus from spreading further during the Second wave as well. The UP CM himself had an interaction session with these surveillance teams recently where he closely reviewed the entire situation of the state.

With their reactivation on April 7, in just 20 days, these watchdog committees have identified 1,47,729 migrants in the districts. At the same time, these committees are creating awareness among the people, assuring that the Yogi government is standing with its people at every step. They serve as the link between communities and government in curbing the cases, visiting door-to-door to list potential cases and link them with team members to conduct screening.

On the instructions of the Chief Minister, around 60,569 mohalla surveillance committees have been set up in 58,194 gram panchayats and 12,016 in urban areas to provide relief and timely medical facilities to the common people against the deadly second wave.

Ensuring safety for all, these committees are also working in 22,069 containment zones in the 75 districts. During a period of 20 days, from April 7 to April 27, the surveillance committees have so far identified 1,47,729 migrants in all the districts. Symptoms of COVID-19 were identified in around 4,88,393 people by these committees. Testing of 16,98,958 persons was carried out, of which 81,245 were found to be infected (COVID positive). 75,985 persons were isolated.

On the instructions of the Chief Minister, 60,569 monitoring committees have been constituted at the village level with around 40,1851 members. In urban areas, 12016 mohalla surveillance committees are formed to prevent the spread with the local councillor as the chairman of the committee. Members of these committees include representatives of ASHA (Accredited Social health activist), Civil Defence, RWA and regional personnel. While, at the village level, Gram Pradhan is the chairman of the surveillance committees. The Gram Panchayat Secretary is the Members Secretary and representatives of Asha, Anganwadikatri, Kotedar, Lekhpal, Rojgar Sevak, Chowkidar and others are the members of these committees.

Surveillance committees are working to provide medical kit to the corona infected patients, creating awareness for vaccination, tele calling services, maintain social distancing, use of masks, washing hands etc. in villages and cities. Surveillance committees are also arranging isolation facilities for people detected with COVID symptoms. Special attention was paid to the identification and treatment of the elderly above 60 years, pregnant women and young children and people suffering from morbidity.
