As the Southern state prepares itself for first Congress government, here we decode 5 reasons for Cong’s maiden govt in India’s youngest state. Telangana was formed after bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, about 9 years ago in 2014.

Anti-incumbency against KCR govt

In 10 years of Chandrashekhar Rao govt, the accumulation of public anger & resentment against incumbent regime seems to be driving factor behind its ouster. Initial reports suggest that Congress has gained major share of votes in rural & semi-urban areas of the state, both considered as BRS bastions.

Cong’s poll guarantees

Taking a cue from previous elections in Karnataka & Himachal, Congress party proclaimed series of welfare measures during the poll campaign. Its six guarantees proved a great deal in developing connect with the masses. Schemes like Rythu Bharosa, Mahalakshmi, Rythu Bharosa, Indiramma, were propagated to the public and message was loud & clear.

Other Backward castes (OBCs) and Dalit community were also wooed by the Congress-led Opposition.

BJP’s internal chaos & change of state chief

Months before the Assembly election, the BJP effected a major leadership change, replacing its state unit chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar with G Kishan Reddy.

This not just destabilized & weakend the morale of party but also gave the Congress a chance to rev up and revive its prospects.

Corruption allegation

KCR govt came under fire, earlier this year, over barrage of corruption allegations. It was Congress party which launched verbal assault against the incumbent Telangana govt and accused it of malpractices in policy implementation. KCR govt though shrugged it off but the failed to get rid of the ‘taint’ in perception.

Aggressive social media campaign

Congress, despite being late to harness social media potential in furthering its election agenda & poll manifesto, utilized the digital tools effectively this time. The party utilized social media to raise public related issues and sought to capitalize on the public anger aimed at KCR govt.
