Temple attacks in Andhra: The matter escalated as BJP state president Somuveer Raju fainted in police manhandling. BJP workers were protesting against the recent attacks on Hindu deity idols in the state but the police excesses on the demonstration has again exposed its despotic face.

New Delhi: The spate of attack on idols in Hindu temples in Andhra Pradesh has sparked a furore in the state, triggering political battle between Jagan Reddy’s YSR Congress, Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP and BJP.

Jagan Mohan Reddy government has come under heavy fire from Opposition as well as right wing outfits over alleged attack on Hindu temples, as it has not only failed to quell such attacks but largely remained silent on the issue.

The matter escalated on Thursday as BJP state president Somuveer Raju fainted in police manhandling. BJP workers were protesting against the recent attacks on Hindu deity idols in the state but the police excesses on the demonstration has again exposed its despotic face.

BJP IT cell president Amit Malviya on Thursday tweeted a video, saying the state party president Somu Veerraju fainted due to police manhandling. He and BJP workers were raising voice against vandalism in Hindu temples but the police used brute force and roughed them up.

‘128 temples attacked in last 19 months’

Temples have been under attack for many months now, alleges Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP. Senior TDP leader and former Union Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Tuesday claimed that as many as 128 temples were attacked in past 19 months in the State.

Reports suggest state govt’s ‘tacit approval to religious conversion’ is the reason behind such attacks. And, this happened during Jagan Reddy’s father’s tenure also.

This year alone, couple of instances have been reported. In one incident, an idol of Hindu deity Sita at Pandit Nehru Bus Station was allegedly vandalised while in another instance, idol of Ketu was vandalised at Sivalayam at Vuyyuru in Vijayawada outskirts, a leading daily reported.
