Wedding celebrations turn gloomy, UP groom lands up in jail for cow slaughter at home

UP’s law against cow slaughter states that a person has to serve 3 to 10 years in jail on slaughtering a cow, whereas 21 months if the person harms the animal physically. 

New Delhi: Despite strict laws in place against cow slaughter in Uttar Pradesh, stray incidents of slaughter and illegal meat trade keep coming to light. One such incident happened in Rampur district under the Tanda Police Station. A youth named Yasin was about to get married on 18th March and his family was planning to host a ‘dawat-e-walima’, the next day.

Since 17th March, Yasin and his family were busy making arrangements for marriage and holding ‘dawat-e-walima’ for the guests. According to reports, a cow was slaughtered at their home for feeding the guests. Tanda Police got a whiff of this and reached his residence. Yasin and his family were shocked when they saw police at their doorstep.

As police scanned the house, they found more than one quintal of cow meat in their house, after which they arrested Yasin. 6 other persons were apprehended and taken into custody.

Rampur police also tweeted about the case, saying “In connection with the meat of the banned animal, the Tanda Police Station of Rampur district has registered a complaint under relevant sections. Necessary legal action is being taken, the accused have been arrested.”

Yasin, Abdul Salam, Babu Haji, Mohammed Rafi, Bhura and Mohammad Islam have been named in the police complaint, all of whom have been sent to jail.

Groom Yasin lands in jail, loses bride

Yasin’s hopes of getting married has not only been dashed but he has also received a big jolt from the in-laws. According to information received, his wedding has been cancelled after he was sent to jail.

According to Uttar Pradesh’s laws against cow slaughter, a person may be confined to 3 to 10 years of imprisonment for slaughtering a cow, whereas those harming the animal physically faces 21 months in jail.
