Uttar Pradesh Assembly Election results 2022: Winners, Losers and Vote Percentage

The last phases of Assembly saw a high-voltage campaign by star campaigners of all political parties hitting the campaign trail and that included PM Modi, Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav and a host of central leaders of both BJP & Congress.

New Delhi: The BJP-led alliance returned to power in Uttar Pradesh for second consecutive term with a massive mandate. Led by the might of PM Modi & CM Yogi, the saffron alliance won 273 out of 403 seats and secured 41.29% vote share. Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) came a distant second in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh election, securing 111 seats with 32.06 per cent votes.

The two other major parties – Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Indian National Congress (INC) – were reduced to a single digit. BSP won 1 seat and Congress 2 seats.

Another remarkable feature of the elections is that this is for the first time in 37 years that a party or sitting Chief Minister has returned to power in Uttar Pradesh after completing a full term. It was in 1985, when Narayan Dutt Tiwari secured two consecutive terms in the state.

How BJP trounced SP in the hard-fought battle

2022 elections were a fight between BJP might be aided by Central leadership and Akhilesh Yadav’s rainbow alliance. The Exit Polls predicted a decisive lead for Yogi Adityanath-led BJP and political doom for Congress as well as Mayawati’s BSP and the same was replicated when the poll results were declared on March 10. Samajwadi Party was the de-facto ‘alternate choice’ for voters but it failed to garner enough support for challenging Yogi govt.

Looking at the vote share of parties, both BJP and SP got a big jump this election. Latter looked to be the biggest beneficiary but it’s the BJP that reigned supreme over its rivals. By attaining over 45% vote percentage, the party was well in command to cross 300 mark but the SP challenge restrained it from going that far.

Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav

In the 2017 Assembly elections, the BJP won the Hindi heartland with a landslide majority. The saffron party in alliance with smaller parties won 325 seats, its best-ever performance in Assembly elections. It won 312 constituencies on its own while coalition partners won 13 seats. Akhilesh Yadav-led SP was reduced to just 47 seats while Congress & BSP remained at the fringes. In 2017, Suheldeo Rajbhar Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) was part of the SP alliance but this year, it has sided with Samajwadi Party. Not just SBSP, many smaller alliance partners will face the litmus test in these elections
