New Delhi: Axis My India Managing Director and CEO Pradeep Gupta was seen breaking down on national television after his company’s exit poll verdict misfired by a big margin. Gupta’s Axis My India predicted a much larger seat share for the ruling party, thereby making the dream of “Abki baar 400 paar” seem like a reality.

However, on the day of the result, things turned out to be dramatically different. Eventually, Pradeep Gupta wept on air at India Today’s live coverage of the election result. In the end, the psephologist was consoled by the journalists present around him.

“We predicted 361-401 seats for the NDA..”- Pradeep Gupta

According to the Lok Sabha exit polls verdict of Axis My India, NDA was anticipated to come back to power in the country with a remarkable majority. However, the intriguing part of this was the astonishing numbers which were predicted in favour of NDA. Axis had predicted that  BJP would win the elections with a cumulative seat of around 361 to 401 seats.

Unfortunately, as the counting reaches the final few rounds, the tally of NDA stands at 295 seats with BJP itself winning 239 seats. It also means that BJP has secured 60-65 seats lower than its final tally of 2019. The biggest shocker for BJP so far has been Uttar Pradesh where it has seen a drastic decrease of seats to 33. Likewise, in other parts like Maharashtra and Bengal also there have been unprecedented losses on the part of the ruling party.

Gupta said,”…We need to introspect on what went wrong.” One of the major reasons for the INDIA alliance has been the votes of the Dalits which has turned the entire scenario upside down in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra. Nevertheless, Gupta was quick to remark that the exit poll was spot on for the seats in Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu. Furthermore, the 4 assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh also turned out to be true.
