WATCH: Train runs in reverse for 35 kms in Uttarakhand, after hitting a cattle on tracks

The incident took place after cattle run over. The train stopped just short of the Khatima yard safely.

New Delhi: In an alarming and scary incident, the Purnagiri Jan Shatabdi, heading towards Tanakpur in Uttarakhand started running backward. The train ran in reverse for about 35 km, creating confusion and panic among the passengers on board.

According to reports, the Purnagiri Janshatabdi Express was on its way from Delhi to Uttarakhand’s Tanakpur when the driver had to press brakes to avoid collision with an animal that had strayed on to the railway tracks. After the accident, the train driver lost control of the locomotive and the entire train started moving backward.

According to the North Eastern Railways, the train did not derail and all passengers were transported safely to Tanakpur.

“The incident took place after cattle run over. The train stopped just short of the Khatima yard safely. There was no derailment and all passengers are safe, they were transported to Tanakpur. A grade-level inquiry has been ordered in the incident,” an official statement from the ministry of railways said.

After the train was stopped at Khatima, the passengers were sent to Tanakpur by bus.

The loco pilot and the guard present in the train have been suspended and an inquiry has been ordered to look into the incident.

The Jan Shatabdi runs between Tanakpur and Delhi junction.
