New Delhi: Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) has swept the West Bengal Panchayat Elections again, by a huge margin. In the ongoing counting of votes, TMC continues to take unassailable lead against the political rivals with none of the parties giving it a fight.
However, one of the big talking point is Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) snatching victory in two strongholds of Mamata Banerjee. Two BJP candidates have given ‘shock defeat’ to TMC candidates in the Rampurhat region of Birbhum district, belonging to Mamata’s maternal uncle.
Mamata’s maternal uncle lives in Kusuba village of Rampurhaat. Out of three booths here, BJP candidates recording victory in 2 booths of the Gram Panchayat elections has given saffron party a reason to rejoice while it has come as a setback for the TMC.
Mamata’s maternal uncle Anil Mukherjee & his family lives in Kusuba village, which was covered by booth number 31 of the Gram Panchayat. BJP nominee Archana Hajra won from here defeating TMC’s Gautam Late.
In the adjacent booth No 32, another BJP nominee Gangadhar Haajra defeated TMC candidate.
Though, TMC has emerged as the dominant force in Panchayat elections with no rival in near sight, the defeat in these two booths has given people a reason to talk about.
During the course of campaign, Mamata spoke a lot about this village and the stories associated with it. Many a times, she reminisced about ‘good old days’ of childhood spent here but with saffron wave subduing TMC here came as a shock & surprise for many. TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee also visited the region, a couple of times.
The counting of votes for Bengal Panchayat elections is underway. TMC has maintained a consistent lead over others, rather it’s stellar performance has dwarfed other parties.
From Gram Panchayat to Panchayat Samitis to Zila Panchayat, the ruling TMC recorded thumping majority in all the rural bodies.
Till last reports, the TMC is understood to have won 15,000 seats in all segments of rural body polls.
