New Delhi: Bhagwant Singh Mann is leading the headlines today, as he broke the 75 years rule of all the current Opposition parties and made his debut as the chief minister of Punjab. The Aam Aadmi Party with the major number of votes defeated the chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi in Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu in Amritsar East, former Punjab CM Amarinder Singh in Patiala, and Shiromani Akali Dal patriarch Parkash Singh Badal in Lamb.

Interestingly, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Bhagwant Mann knew each other before entering politics. Mann in the initial days of his career as a famous comedian. It was 2006, Mann was cracking jokes on the stage of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, while Sidhu sat on the other side and judged the contestants.

At this moment, the comedian turned politician, Mann joked, “I asked a politician what rajneeti (politics) means. He told me it is the act of deciding how to govern. Then I asked what gormint (government) means. He said it means those who gaur (look closely) at each issue only to forget it a mint (minute) later.” Mann chuckled, as little did he know that the joke would add irony in the later years.

Navjot Sidhu heard the joke and burst into laughter.

However, the joke wasn’t enough to make Bhagwant Mann the winner of that season of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge. According to judge Sidhu, another contestant was funnier, who bagged the trophy.

However, the table turned in the world of politics with the massive success of the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab and Bhagwant Mann becoming the face of Chief Minister in the state.
