Who is Afzal Ansari, another MP set to lose Lok Sabha membership?

His verdict came hours after his brother Mukhtar Ansari was convicted in the same case and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

New Delhi: Bahujan Samaj Party MP Afzal Ansari, has been convicted in the 2007 Gangsters Act case for kidnapping and murder and sentenced to four years in prison. His verdict came hours after his brother Mukhtar Ansari was convicted in the same case and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. The MP MLA court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Afzal Ansari while a fine of Rs 5 lakh has been imposed on Mukhtar.

Who is Afzal Ansari?

Afzal Ansari is a BSP MP from Ghazipur and he comes from an illustrious family which has served the nation in some or the other form. His ancestors included freedom fighters, politicians and soldiers in Late Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, who was once the President of the Indian National Congress and Late Brigadier Usman Ansari, a Mahavir Chakra awardee martyred in action. Late Faridul Haque Ansari and Shaukatullah Ansari were former MPs.

He is the son of Subhanullah Ansari and Begum Rabia, and has a Post Graduate degree from Post Graduate College, Ghazipur.

He and Mukhtar were accused in the kidnapping and murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai.

Why will he lose his Parliament membership?

Afzal is set to lose his Lok Sabha membership after the conviction. As per the Parliament rules a member sentenced to two years or more in prison is automatically disqualified.

Former Congress MP Rahul Gandhi saw a similar fate as he, recently, was disqualified from Lok Sabha after a conviction and two years sentence in a 2019 defamation case.
