More worry for ‘flustered’ TikTok: Former AG Mukul Rohatgi refuses to appear for Chinese app in court against GOI

Today, Former Attorney General of India (AG) Mukul Rohatgi has refused to represent the TikTok in court against the Government of India.

New Delhi: After the government imposed ban on Chinese app TikTok in India, the latter is reportedly soliciting support to stay afloat in one of its biggest markets.

A day after TikTok ban in India, Chinese Foreign Ministry took note of it and issued statement, saying that it was ‘strongly concerned’ over restrictions on the popular video-sharing app.

Today, Former Attorney General of India (AG) Mukul Rohatgi has refused to represent the TikTok in court against the Government of India.


Rohatgi said that he won’t appear for the Chinese app against the Government of India amid ongoing ‘tense times’.

This comes just two days after India blocked 59 Chinese apps including the ones like TikTok and ShareIt that were very popular among the young population.

Earlier, TikTok, in its first response after the ban, had said that it was complying with the ‘interim order’ and that it would meet concerned government stakeholders TikTok said that it “continued to comply with data privacy and security requirements under the Indian law” and that it had not shared or exported private information about users in India to “any foreign government, including the Chinese government.”

Govt bans 59 Chinese apps including ShareIt, UC Browser

59 China-origin apps, including TikTok, UC Browser, ShareIt among other apps were banned following several reports about the misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for “stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India”.

The government said that these apps were banned because they were engaged in activities which were “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order”.
