International Disability Day: Know history, theme, and significance

New Delhi: Around the world, people are celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities world today i.e., December 3. Every year the day is celebrated to highlight issues that affect people with disabilities. Here, we are going to explain the theme, history, and significance of World Disability Day.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the fortitude and accomplishments of specially-abled persons across the world.

”On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I laud the fortitude and accomplishments of our Divyang sisters and brothers. Our Government has undertaken numerous initiatives which have created opportunities for persons with disabilities and enabled them to shine,” wrote PM Modi on Twitter.

The theme for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is declared every year over a month before the occasion. It is shared by the UN on its website. The theme for the year 2022 is ”Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world”.

History of International Day of Persons with Disabilities 

In the United Nations General Assembly’s (UNGA) 37th plenary meeting, the resolution to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was adopted on October 4, 1992. Before the resolution was passed, the UNGA declared 1983-1992 as the decade of Disabled persons.

Significance of international Day of Persons with Disabilities 

According to the UN, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated to make aware people of issues of concern and mobilize political will to resolve them.
