New Delhi: Karwa Chauth, one of the most auspicious festival is being celebrated by the Hindu married women today. On this day, married women pray to Karwa Mata, Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha for their husbands’ long lives, prosperity and safety.

On this day women observe nirjala vrat by not drinking a drop of water or having food for the whole day. Married women read the story of Karwa Chauth in a group of married women.

When the moon rises, women look at it and their husband through a sieve, pray to the moon and give an offering and break their fast only in the evening after sighting at the moon.

They break the fast with a sip of water from their husband’s hands to end the vrat. Therefore, the moonrise timing becomes one of the most important aspect for this auspicious day.

About Karwa Chuth:

The auspicious festival of Karwa Chauth or the day when it is celebrated is known as Karak Chaturthi (करक चतुर्थी). The Karwa or Karak means or refers to the earthen pot through which water offering, known as Argha (अर्घ), is made to the moon.

Karwa plays a very important and significant role during the Karwa Chauth Puja and it is also given as Dan to the Brahmin or any eligible woman.

The festival of Karwa Chauth is more popular in North Indian states. Ahoi Ashtami Vrat is observed for the wellbeing of sons after four days of Karwa Chauth.
