Lunar Eclipse May 5, 2023: Date, Time, Food Practices to be followed

Some Indians add Tulsi leaves to water and drink it to repel the malefic effect of the Eclipse and avoid eating white-colored food items.

New Delhi: A Celestial phenomenon when the Sun, Moon, and the Earth align together in a way that the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow on the Moon, and thus the sunlight gets blocked from reaching the Moon, this phenomenon is known as Lunar Eclipse. This year the Celestial phenomena will occur on May 5. It is also a rare Eclipse this year, as this is Penumbral Lunar Eclipse.

The Eclipse is visible through various parts of the world, including Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, and Antarctica. This year Buddha Purnima and Lunar Eclipse will fall on the same day.

Date and Time of Lunar Eclipse:

The first Lunar Eclipse of  the year will be held on May 5

The first contact of Moon with Penumbra- 8:45 PM on May 5

The last contact with the Penumbra- 1 AM on May 6.

Maximum  Eclipse– 10:53 PM

Duration of Lunar Eclipse: 4 hours 15 minutes 34 seconds

What to eat during the Lunar Eclipse:

There are certain beliefs regarding the eating practice that are followed during the Eclipse. In India there are certain beliefs that are followed, many astrologers believe that during the Eclipse harmful bacteria and ultraviolet rays are emitted which contaminate the food, therefore some people totally avoid taking any food during the period of the Lunar Eclipse. Some Indians add Tulsi leaves to water and drink it to repel the malefic effect of the Eclipse and avoid eating white-colored food items.

Many Yoga experts believe that avoiding food completely is not required during the Lunar Eclipse. One should eat light food that could be digested easily, this is because the digestive system is slow during the Eclipse, therefore it is difficult to digest heavy food. Experts advise avoiding heavy high-fat food during Lunar Eclipse.
