Mahavir Jayanti is an auspicious day for millions of Jains around the world, who celebrate the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, the 24th and last Tirthankara (teacher) of Jainism. Mahavir Jayanti is one of the most important festivals in the Jain calendar and is observed on the 13th day of the Chaitra month according to the Hindu calendar, which usually falls in March or April. This time, it is the 4th of April.

History

Lord Mahavir was born in 599 BC in Kundagrama, which is now in the state of Bihar, India. He was born to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala, and his birth name was Vardhamana. He renounced his royal life at the age of 30 and became a monk, dedicating his life to finding the path to liberation. After 12 years of penance, meditation, and self-discipline, Lord Mahavir attained enlightenment and became a Tirthankara. He spent the rest of his life spreading his teachings of non-violence, compassion, and self-discipline to people across the Indian subcontinent.

Significance

Primarily, devotees offer prayers, chant hymns, and participate in processions to celebrate the life and teachings of Lord Mahavir. The day is marked by the hoisting of the Jain flag, known as the Jhanda, on the temples. The flag represents the principles of Jainism – Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truth), and Anekaantvad (non-absolutism).

On this day, some Jains observe a day-long fast and engage in acts of charity and selflessness. The day is also marked by religious discourses and meditation, where devotees reflect on the teachings of Lord Mahavir and strive to follow his path of non-violence and compassion.
