New Study reveals ‘lack of sleep’ can damage your brain, here is what it says

Experts say that sleep deprivation leads to various effects on brain functioning, some of them are short term and some of them are long-lasting.

New Delhi: Lack Of sleep not only affects your mood but also impacts your brain health a study reveals. A study published in the American  Chemical Society’s Journal of Proterm Research states that a protective protein’s level in the brain declines due to sleep deprivation leading to neuronal death. The mice study claimed that there was neurological damage in the hippocampus a part of the brain that is involved in learning and memory.

As a part of the research, the authors evaluated, how well mice navigate a simple maze and learned to recognize new objects after being sleep-deprived for two days.

Heailth Issues due to lack of sleep

Experts say that sleep deprivation leads to various effects on brain functioning, some of them are short term and some of them are long-lasting. Lack of sleep can reduce attention and concentration. Storage and retrieval of memory are affected as Memory consolidation happens during sleep. Sleep loss can lead to impaired de decision-making and lack of memory control. According to Dr. Shobh, the worsening conditions of the brain like migraine and epilepsy are known but the problems like anxiety and depression are not so recognized by the people which are the outcome of sleep deprivation. Long-term sleep deprivation can have physical consequences, the person will be prone to chronic  diseases like inflammatory diseases. It can lead to hypertension, diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia and all these can lead to cardiac arrest and strokes.
